Focus Friday: An Angel

I picked stjoe’s thoughtful silhouette for this reflective time of year. It was one of 20+ Okanagan shots submitted for the Best-of-the-Year gallery on Flickr. Happy New Year, Awesome Okanaganites.

Focus Friday: Orchard Shack

The valley seems so black and white these days. Looking forward to the colour seeping  back into the landscape as the days get longer.

Kingdom Cloud, Rising in the Charts

Saw on my Facebook a little link from Matt Niemann to the Top 30 chart for CFUV 101.9 in Victoria and Kingdom Cloud is  doing pretty well for themselves. If you’ve been in the Okanagan or Kelowna for a while now, no doubt you’ve caught them at a show or heard the buzz around these kids, but to see our locals head off to college and have their album at #23 on a list including Caribou, Kid Cudi, LCD Soundsystem, Bob Dylan, Cee-Lo Green, Daft Punk, The Russian Futurists is something else entirely.

Focus Friday: Long Way Home…

Nighttime view from Kelowna’s new pedestrian overpass — I liked the wet winter vibe, garish lights and that trippy purple sky.

1st Annual Warm Hearts, Full Bellies Gala

Tonight is the 1st Annual Warm Hearts, Full Bellies Gala at Avenue Classic Bar. This fundraiser is to collect monetary donations and non-perishable food items for the Kelowna Food Bank. This year the need for people to use this service has risen substantially! The Food Bank is in need of more donations and non-perishables for the people and families around Kelowna.

The evening will consist of live acoustic music, complimentary Hors d’œuvre, drink specials (with a portion of the proceeds of each drink going to the KFB), silent auction, raffle draw and more! Avenue Classic Bar is located downtown in the Prestige Hotel, fundraiser starts at 6:00pm.

The Boxing Day Show, Venue Announced

What are you doing boxing day this year? On Sunday, December 26, some great guys are putting together a live show at The Black Box Theater featuring the likes of Dyeing Merchants, A-OK darling Little Jungles, High School, Dreamcoat & Matt Vautour. The show starts at 7pm where you can catch Recordbreaker spinning some records before, after and in-between sets.

Tickets are $10, though you’ll have to ask the boys where to pick them up. Visit the Facebook Event page and click Attend because that way it will be for real; in the way that only Facebook can make things for real.

Dance ’til dawn!

In Focus: Darrel Giesbrecht

Local photographer Darrel Giesbrecht has been posting amazing photos to the I Love the Okanagan group on Flickr (as okanaganboy) for a couple of years. Earlier this year I assembled a gallery of some his shots based on the theme serenity.  I saw a real sense of calm and peacefulness in his work, and I suspect that this sense goes beyond how the scenes appear — they convey the actual experience of serenity, and probably capture something of Darrel’s personal journey.

Some of the pictures have the standard elements we associate with calming effects: water, forests and emptiness. But they strike me as unique views of familiar landscapes, and others explicitly include people as part of the experience of landscape, enjoying a type of spiritual connection with beautiful places. It’s impossible to encompass the full scope of Darrel’s work in a short profile, but you can check out his stuff online and exhibits up and down the valley. He’s shown his pictures in several local venues including the Rotary Center for the Arts.

My friend Ryan Donn has created an excellent Christmas podcast featuring a variety of artists from around the Okanagan and BC. Artists featured in this podcast include: Greg Szcebel, Nat Jay, The Zolas, Corey Doak, Ryan Donn, Andrew Allen, & Adaline.

So sit back, huddle up by a fire, pour yourself a tea/eggnog and rum/hot chocolate/glass of wine/miscellaneous and listen to some of the best BC has to offer for some yuletide cheer!
