Underground Sound

Remember the days of old? Heading to the record store and exploring hundreds of thousands of vinyls, in search of that perfect sound? Well, I don’t, I’m only 24, but luckily I am afforded this luxury now! Take a step back in time at Underground Music Kelowna! I had the pleasure of walking by this relatively new music store at #4–1331 Ellis St and ran into manager Angela who filled me in. Michael and Victor (formerly of Oz by Cole, near where we spotted All You Need Is Love) have traveled the world and many record stores throughout to find the perfect big city vibe to share with us. I’m not an expert, but I think it may be the largest collection of albums in the Okanagan.

The vinyl ranges from mid-century to about the ’80s/’90s and prices are comparable to a CD and in some cases even getting the album off iTunes. They have a bargain bin where prices are $4.99 for classic albums, and just because they’re cheap, doesn’t mean they’re skimping on the quality. Many of the vinyls in the bargain bin are just more copies of what they already have, the quality of the vinyl is great to mint and if you find a scratched one in your travels through the store they insist you let them know so they can remove it from the shelves.

I personally picked up a copy of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon,” Steve Miller Band’s “Book of Dreams,” and—of course—Eagles’ “Greatest Hits 1971-75,” all albums I very much grew up with. Underground Music also has a Warehouse hidden in West Kelowna with about 150,000 other titles they’ve collected and just haven’t had a chance to bring into the store yet. So, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, they probably have it somewhere… so don’t hesitate to ask!

Thanks Underground Music Kelowna, we hope you stick around for some time!
