Memphis Blues

It can be said I love me some southern cooking, and while Memphis Blues Barbecue House at 289 Bernard Street isn’t necessarily only Kelowna based, it is inherently British Columbian. In January 1999 George Siu (an original owner of Not Just Desserts) and Park Heffelfinger (Vancouver Wine Academy) had a stopover in Memphis while flying from New Orleans. Lunch was a Pulled Pork Sandwich, and it was love at first bite. I know the feeling gentlemen. They now lay claim to 6 locations in BC, not too bad if you ask me.

I used to work for a company based out of Nashville and spent the week there in 2008. While it would never be a place I would move to permanently, something can be said of the down-home cookin’ and southern comfort surrounding it. A dinner there is a family event, people get together on the back porch watching fireflies, laughing. I’ve found this attitude to be directly transferable at Memphis Blues. My first time there, I ordered the Memphis Feast, a signature item meant for four people with only one other person and god help me if we didn’t finish the whole thing. It’s basically every meat they carry “plus all the fixins’“. Perfect way to sample BBQ! They also have quick sandwiches and a poutine with their BBQ sauce in lieu of gravy!

I especially like it in the summertime as you can sit on the patio. So! Next time you’re downtown on a hot summer day, stop in for a quick bite and some cool bevvies. You may even get lucky and catch some live Blues music!
