Focus Friday: Okanagan Sunflowers

arrowleaf balsamroot

You’ve probably seen Kelowna’s official flower blanketing sunny hillsides up and down the valley. The official name has the ring of an ingredient in a witch’s brew: Arrowleaf Balsamroot. It was an important food source for First Nations people, who ate the starchy root and tender shoots in early spring. Every year, local nature photographers try to find unique views of the exuberant wildflower, and I thought Chris’s subtle take on it this year was fantastic.

We Are The City’s “High School” Video Series Released Online

Amazing Factory Productions proudly presents We Are The City‘s High School (A Video Series). This series has a video for every song on We Are The City’s latest release High School. The videos were created in record time, and with the help of many of their close friends and family, and lots of late nights and early mornings.

They strongly feel that these videos need to be presented all together, much like you’d sit down to listen to a vinyl record, they belong as one collective piece. They sincerely hope you enjoy this collaboration.

InPrint: Vancouver’s Black Mountain return to Kelowna

Black MountainVancouver’s one of a kind phsych-rock group Black Mountain will return to Habitat on Thursday, May 26, 2011. Two years and one album later, Black Mountain are ready to revisit the venue alongside special guests Slow Learners, also from Vancouver. Since their last appearance in Kelowna, Black Mountain has toured overseas, played numerous festival lineups, and in September 2010 released their latest album Wilderness Heart.

Black Mountain formed in 2004 but didn’t surface into the spotlight until they signed to Jagjaguwar and released their Druganaut EP in 2005. To much critical acclaim, the band later released the full-length In the Future in 2008. Still running hot off the success and accolades received from Wilderness Heart the band continues to shock and awe fans with their melodic, heavy yet at the same time soft, blend of classic metal and psychedelic folk rock.

Tickets for Black Mountain at Habitat (248 Leon Ave.) on May 26 are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets are going fast so be sure to purchase your tickets in advance at Leo’s Video, Tweaked and Yummy Vintage Apparel and online at For more information
