RBC GranFondo Kelowna is Coming to the Okanagan

On July 16th 1,200 cyclists will sweep through the Okanagan in the RBC GranFondo Kelowna, over a spectacular and challenging 115km course featuring dazzling views of Lake Okanagan.

“Gran Fondo” is loosely translated from Italian as “big ride.” These kinds of rides are extremely popular in Europe, some attracting over 10,000 cyclists, and are now gaining popularity in North America.

On rides organized by GranFondo Canada, the company responsible for the RBC GranFondo Kelowna, cyclists are fully supported along the way with aid stations providing nutrition, roving mechanical support to help with any mishaps, and a small army of volunteers who keep the event going and cheer riders on along the way. The RBC GranFondo Kelowna is a “bottled water-free” event, where cyclists are required to carry re-usable water bottles to fill at water tanks along the way, as to avoid leaving a wake of litter behind.

GranFondo Canada has some experience under their belt to bring to the Okanagan. The inaugural 2010 RBC GranFondo Whistler sold out in three months at 4,000 riders five months prior to the event. Riders in Whistler were excited for the rare opportunity to ride the course on a previously unprecedented lane width dedicated to cyclists only.

The 2010 RBC GranFondo Whistler also had a great impact on the communities along the route, an important aspect of the event that GranFondo Canada aims to bring to the Okanagan region. In 2010, the Whistler event generated $2.8M in net economic activity. People from all over B.C. came to ride, volunteer and enjoy the area to make the event a huge success.

There are still spots available in the event for enthusiastic cyclists who want to challenge themselves as well as experience Tour de France style riding in a peleton, and for you A-OK readers we have a special treat! We’ll have an A-OK giveaway running near the end of May for your chance to WIN your registration spot in the GranFondo ($225 value).

The event is also open for community members to come out and cheer on the riders or volunteer to help out. Spectators, volunteers, and residents are all invited to enjoy the festivities at the finish line where the family friendly plaza by the beach is the perfect place to join riders and organizers to celebrate a job well done.
