Wheels for a Cure – This Weekend!

Wheel’s For A Cure is a non-profit society that is preparing for its 2nd Annual Event!

In our inaugural year we raised over $5000 for the Canadian Cancer Society! It was a successful weekend and we look forward to bigger and better things to come for our May 4th, 5th and 6th 2012 event.

The purpose of the tour event is to raise funds specifically for Prostate Cancer. All monies raised will be put towards research, information, support and financial assistance and the Canadian Cancer Society Souther Interior Rotary Lodge located beside the Kelowna General Hospital.

2012’s event is going to be a two day road tour that will travel through and stop at many Okanagan communities. Vehicles will be of show standard and be attending from all parts of Western Canada. Participation for this year’s event is limited to 125 vehicles so book early to avoid being disappointed.

You will get the chance to meet our sponsors along the route. Check out the Agenda page to see what events are being planned.

Fashionate: Tips for your Fingertips!

Clothing is the ultimate way to make your fashion statement known, and unfortunately, there are times when you cannot express yourself through your beloved threads. In this dreadful situation we must use what our momma’s gave us and show off our nails!

Bold statement nails are a huge trend this summer, whether they are stick on, glue on or painted on there is a style to meet every girls needs. Unless you have been living under a rock, it is very well known colour is dominant this season from pink hair to coral shoes, people watching has become pleasantly more colourful. If you are not ready to take the leap into a hot pink blazer begin at your tips. The top hues for this year are of course, green and Tangerine. Hunter green was a dominant tone during the winter months, with the flowers blossoming we are seeing more pistachio’s and emerald greens to reflect the seasonal change. Choose a polish with creamy undertones and solid colours; you want to have noticeable colour on your nails, especially when it’s green!

Tangerine is a HUGELY amazing colour that you can pair with almost anything. When you are making your polish decision with this summer hue, the choices will be an orange or red undertone. An orange undertone will present a more playful fun nail whereas red is striking and strong, Both are great choices so why not experiment with both!

Staying on trend with crowd stopping colours, neon nails are a fun flirty way to brighten up any rainy day. If you have a uniform at work or find yourself drifting toward neutral tones with your wardrobe, step way outside the box and choose an opaque neon hue such as canary yellow, or majestic blue. You are sure to stop anybody in their tracks to admire your colourful nails.

Pretty pinks will never go out of style, simply choose your favourite pink, pair a sunhat, your favourite bikini and a new pair of sunnies and you are set for the Okanagan beaches!

Nails are a great way to experiment with colour and new fashion trends without investing your life savings into a new wardrobe. Nails can bring any classic outfit to reflect current trends. Kelowna offers a wide variety of nail bars from private rock star nail artists, to high end spas that offer services.  O’spa, Mirror Mirror, At Your Fingertips, just to name a few, are some of the best nail salons in town! See you all on the beaches!

A-OK Rooftop Sessions: beekeeper

beekeeper visited our fair region Wednesday for a show at Habitat and we connected in an attempt to arrange a Rooftop Session if we could all find the time. The day was trying very hard to share with us its summer vibe, and while there was only about an hour of pure sunlight all day, that hour appeared the second we were ready to start their set.

beekeeper performs their song “Take Me Back (To the Place)” right on the roof of Habitat. Incidentally, the same song was part of our A-OK Mixcast Sixteen this month. Never the types to shy away from a challenge, we chose to make this A-OK Rooftop Session un-acoustic (otherwise known as plugged-in). Yeah. Try hauling some huge ass amps up two rickety ladders some day.

Just kidding, don’t. It’s incredibly dangerous totally worth it.

Focus Friday: Okanagan Sunflowers

We know winter is officially done when the Arrowleaf Balsamroot starts popping up. They’re just getting going right now, but over the next few weeks they’ll be blanketing south-facing valley slopes with wildflower exuberance.  With yesterday’s rain and today’s sun, they should be exploding — why not head out on a hike this weekend to see where you can find them? Gary spotted this cluster earlier in the week.

“Fit For A King” The Renaissance of Real Food

I came across this, and thought you might find it interesting. A holistic nutritionist and a rock ‘n’ roller join forces to prepare meals “Fit For A King” using only a vintage Vespa, real food, and a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. Together, they’ll change the country in just 13 episodes.

The first season of Fit For A King is currently in production, being filmed entirely in the Okanagan Valley.

In each episode, hosts James Blonde, and Lisa Kilgour, leave their “home” at picturesque God’s Mountain Estate, in search of an outdoor adventure nearby, featuring and exploring the beautiful surroundings the Okanagan has to offer.

With over 100 wineries in the region, Fit For A King will feature a selected winery for each episode, meeting with vintners to choose an exquisite, locally sourced wine.

“The show will visit organic, holistic and free-range farms and markets – all within the valley – in search of real, whole food, with which we will prepare delicious, nutritious meals,” adds Trance Blackman, the show’s co-producer, co-creator, and photographer.

Fit For A King will not only entertain you – with the most beautiful vistas, outdoor adventures, and interesting guests – but also educate, motivate, and inspire you to return to a simple, enriched, healthy lifestyle.

“We’ve set out to film and capture the wineries, outdoor activities, and the natural beauty of the Okanagan, in the most complimentary way.  We’re presenting our back garden to the world. Additionally, our goal for the show is to be distributed to over 90 countries,” says Blonde, show creator and producer.

The producers feel that the general public want to change – need to change, but are confused about the plethora of information out there. They feel it’s too expensive or complicated to eat well and cook real food. With this show, the producers aim to dispel the myths, clear up the confusion, and demonstrate how easy it can be to live a lifestyle Fit For A King.
