2nd Annual Naked Ziplining for Charity

Yes, you heard it right, naked ziplining for charity, and the second annual at that!

Last year us girls of the SS Rodeo Roller Derby team fundraised, and took it all off on the lines at ZipZone Adventure Park, raising money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. 8 girls participated raising a total of $1500.00.

This year we’ve put out a call to try and get 100 ladies to participate, hoping to raise a minimum of $10,000.00 to donate to the foundation.

On June 21st we will take to the lines at ZipZone Adventure Park in Peachland, BC.  If you’re interested in donating to the cause, please contact us:  info@ssrodeo.ca

There are also a few more spots open for females wishing to participate, follow the link to sign up:

ZipZone Adventure Park

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer), and one in nine women is expected to develop breast cancer in her lifetime.  Help us raise money for breast cancer research in the hopes of one day finding a cure for this terrible disease.

See you on the lines!

Kyuss Lives! at Flashbacks Nov. 25

Pioneers of the stoner rock scene return after a 10 year hiatus for their North American tour, and with a stop in Kelowna at that!

Kyuss Lives! takes to the stage at Flashbacks Night Club, this Friday, November 25th, with local rock band Bucknife opening the show.  Doors open at 9pm.

Tickets are only $25 in advance, or $35 at the door.  Get em in advance to ensure you get in!  Check the event page for ticket outlets.

Kyuss was formed in 1990 by vocalist John Garcia, guitarist Josh Homme, bassist Nick Oliveri, and drummer Brant Bjork.  Hailing from Palm Desert, California, the group got their start throwing outdoor shows in the deserts of Southern California.   Their sound has been described as “stoner rock” or “desert rock”…..a mix of rock and metal with a psychedelic feel.  The group disbanded in 1997, with each member carrying on in various musical projects, most notably Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri going on to form Queens of the Stone Age.

Reformed as Kyuss Lives! in June 2010 featuring original members John Garcia, Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork, with Bruno Fevery filling in for Josh Homme on guitar.  The band has been touring the world since March 2011, and plan to release a new album in 2012.

If you aren’t familiar with the awesomeness that is Kyuss….go here and listen….and love…… KYUSS LIVES!

SS Rodeo Derby Girls Zipline Naked at ZipZone Adventure Park

Believe it or not this isn’t something the SS Rodeo came up with on their own!  When we heard about recently opened ZipZone Adventure Park in Peachland, BC offering the chance to zipline naked and raise money for your favorite charity we knew this was something we had to do.  So on June 23rd, 8 of us derby girls took it all off, harnessed up and rode 2 of the highest ziplines in North America!  Raising funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, we collectively pulled in $1500 for breast cancer research.

ZipZone Adventure Park opened up just last month in Peachland.  With 7 lines in total (6 cross canyon lines and 1 training line), they have the highest lines in North America, one at over 350ft in the air, and the longest at 1800ft.  They offer group discounts, full moon rides, and “Dangle in the Dark” where you can zip across all 7 lines, in the dark!

The park is beautiful and the staff are great, this is definitely something to experience in the Okanagan.

Us girls had a great day of team building, ziplining, and raising money for an important cause.  If you ever get the chance to zipline naked i’d highly recommend it, very freeing ;)

The SS Rodeo have their next Roller Derby Bout comin up this Saturday, July 9th at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, where they take on the Ridge Meadows team.  Tickets are only $12+service fees, and kids under 10 get in free!  Available at the SOEC box office or online www.valleyfirsttix.com.  The event also features a nuvo-burlesque and hooping half time performance, as well as a vendor village and beer gardens.  For more details check out the event page:  SS Rodeo vs. Ridge Meadows

Sixdecibels Entertainment bring the rock!

Rock n roll, and a steady dosage of it.  It feels like every time I turn around these days there’s a rock show being put on by Sixdecibels.

Owner Terence Smith started up Sixdecibels Entertainment in Kelowna just over a year ago and began organizing shows with local bands for Flashbacks Night Club.  Since then he’s brought in some well known Canadian acts such Econoline Crush, The Creepshow, and most recently a very successful Three Inches of Blood and Cancer Bats concert.

Tomorrow night he’s doin’ it again, bringing The Matadors to O’Flannigans Pub.  The Matadors are a Horrorbilly band from London, Ontario.  Going on 14 years now, they are a staple in the Canadian Rockabilly scene, and are known for their wild, high energy shows.  Opening acts for the night include Grim Hymn & The Horrors, Porch Crawler, and Butch Haller & His Chesterfield Ramblers.  Tickets only $15.  That’s another great thing about Sixdecibels, their shows almost always showcase 3-4 bands, great value for your money.

Check out the upcoming shows they’ve got lined up for Kelowna at Flashbacks Night Club this Summer:

June 24 – Stand Down, Bucknife, Cold Driven, All Else Fails

July 08 – Tonight We Burn The Sky Red, Empyria, Avian Villain Symphony, Krousis

Aug 05 – Bucknife, No Other Way, Hellboys, and guests

Aug 07 – Big John Bates, Malibu Knights, plus guests

I’m lovin’ all this live music goodness, and pumped for The Matadors show Thursday!   SS Rodeo roller girls will be representin’ on skates ;)
