Thomas Kjorven CD Release Party

Thomas Kjorven is a musician /singer/songwriter/ and producer currently residing in Kelowna B.C. With his unique blend of Blues and Jazz, Thomas brings a fresh blend of soul to the piano-coustic scene.

As singer, songwriter, composer and producer – the talent is limitless and his inspiration has no boundaries. “I want to capture people with a unique sound and hopefully find some common ground through my lyrics. My aim is ultimately to make music that I would buy, albums that I would want to listen to on repeat in my car.” Pulling from a wide variety of influence from neo-soul legend D’angelo to the folk roots of Ben Harper or Ray LaMontagne, Thomas has found his own sound some where in the middle. “I have yet to find a genre that my music fits into completely and I havenʼt heard any other artist that sounds like me. I think that’s a good thing. I would say itʼs unique.”

Currently Thomas owns and operates a landscape design company where he builds custom boulder retaining walls, stairs, and brick patios. ” I thrive on creativity, and although rock work isn’t my hearts cry, it pays the bills, and I find fulfillment in being able to create something custom and beautiful from raw natural materials for someone to enjoy.” Operating heavy machinery and smelling of diesel and rock dust by day, Thomas cleans up into a jazz piano lounge performer and studio producer by night.

Thomas does all of his recording in his home studio, and through his intuitive ear has achieved a remarkable production quality. Fascinated with audio production and addicted to the creative process, Thomas claims he has just begun his musical journey. “I am in constant motion, writing and creating new songs, and I always look forward to sharing my newest project with people”

Score G Productions Inc. on Kickstarter

The Okanagan is Awesome, and a big part of that is the people who make it that way. One of the Locals guilty of awesomeness is Adam Scorgie. You may recognize him as filmmaker of the documentary “The Union: The Business behind getting High“. He is now undergoing a new project “Ice Guardians”, but he needs our help!

The obstacle facing many indie filmmakers is that most studios are only looking for movies that they think will be big box office hits, rather than movies which are thought provoking and educational.

“My true passion in addition to being creative is to focus on very compelling topics that both stimulate interest and educate people. The one quality that separates me from other filmmakers is that I am not in the industry simply to make a lot of money. The passion that drives me is to make thought provoking films that inspire the world in a positive way. ” -Adam Scorgie

Adam needs our help to raise $24,000 to start Score G Productions Inc., this will be “the production company created for the indie community by the indie community.”

In the spirit of A-OK, I raise my glass and popcorn bowl to Adam Scorgie. A true visionary and fellow Kelownian, dedicated to making Kelowna, the Okanagan, and the world, awesome.

Kelowna band, 2010 Polaris Music Prize nominee

Our sister site, VancouverIsAwesome.com, recently ran a piece on the Polaris Music Prize nominees and about how many artists were Vancouver-based. They go on to explain how the Prize is “a music award annually given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label” and it’s a fantastic honour and a great way to spread the love we already have for these bands to new folks.

While the post was focused on bands that are ‘based’ in Vancouver, one of them was calling Kelowna home years before that and we want to send our congratulations to Yukon Blonde! The long list of 40 will be cut down and the short listed bands—of which only 10 will remain—will be announced on July 6th, with the grand prize winner being announced September 20th.

Our fingers are crossed for our boys!
