Food Truck Rally April 21-22, 2016

KEEPING THE DREAM OF THIRD THURSDAYS ALIVE

April 21-22, 2016
4-10 PM
264 Leon Avenue

Awesome Okanagan is pretty excited to be part of another food truck rally…mostly because it’s just so exciting to see so many people in Kelowna come out of hibernation and enjoy each other’s company around a table with good food! Based on the vibe from the inaugural event last October and the first spring event in March, this secret recipe of good things coming together in the mixing pot of an open air parking-lot-patio makes strangers into fast friends; creating a much needed feeling of community in our downtown.

This is the second event of the monthly series called Third Thursdays. On the Third Thursday of every month, a wide variety of food trucks will serve great food from 4pm until 10pm.  After the March Launch Event the main request was to make it a larger event and include more food trucks. So the April event will be spread over 2 days with a different mix of trucks on each day. You asked for it – more food trucks!

The Leon Night Market and Awesome Okanagan have teamed up to present an even better event this month featuring Kelowna’s hottest food trucks serving up delectable delicacies which will pair nicely with the beer, wine, ciders, and spirits from the beverage garden. (19+)

The stellar line up of trucks continues to grow…a detailed announcement will be made the week of letting you know which night your favourite trucks will be there.

Comedy Blood Sport is back! Read a rare interview with the champion, Kyle Patan!

Comedy Bloodsport is back!  Everyone should be partying right now! Hope you are ready to get your brain kicked in with laughs! Reigning champion Kyle Patan defends his title against swarms of hungry sharks on February 7th. If you haven’t seen Kyle before, you have missed a local treasure! Stop doing that! I was lucky enough to snag an interview with him between his private ninja lesson and his appointment with hot babes.  Kyle was leaning on his sports car, drinking a cola. I tried not to let his coolness intimidate me while I hastily jotted down his golden replies.  Enjoy….

Q: What message do you have for the comedians who want to see you crying in defeat?

A: My message for them is that if they’re going to see me cry, it’ll be tears of joy when I win, or they’ll be at my house and we will be watching The Vow.

Q: What can audience members expect to see from you on February 7th?

A: They can expect the k-dog to do the things he always does: Tell fully jokes and refer to himself as the k-dog in the third person.

Q: What do you have to say to critics who say you sold out and went all commercial?

A: I will tell the critics to go shove it! And by it, I mean the new swiffer wet jet and its ultimate cleaning abilities (I am the new spokesperson).

Q: Do you do it for the prizes or for the glory of winning comedy bloodsport?

A: Nothing can beat the glory of winning such a prestigious event like bloodsport, nothing except delicious gift certificates!

Q: Thanks, Kyle! Good luck with your new penis enlarger.

Don’t miss Comedy Bloodsport on February 7th.

Winter is the best time of the year to Laugh out loud

The Habitat is excited to become the new destination for stand up comedy in Kelowna and 2014 is going to be a busy year. The first show, on January 25th, starts it off right with Vancouver’s John Beuhler. John began performing stand up comedy at the age of nineteen and in his first few years he starred in a national comedy special called Chill, won the Just for Laughs Home Grown Comedy Competition and shot two stand-up specials for Canadian national television. All before the age of twenty-five. John has performed in the Just for Laughs Festival Gala where he won over the crowd and was touted as saving the show.

John then went on to win the Corner Gas Comedy contest, giving him $10,000 and an appearance on Corner Gas with his mentor Brent Butt. John has opened for the likes of Dennis Miller, John Rivers, Martin Short, Zach Galifianakis and Craig Ferguson to name just a few. John’s style has been described as wickedly funny, fearless and poignant.

I have seen John perform several times in Vancouver, where he frequently headlines shows at the Comedy Mix. I was blown away, so when we needed to decide which comedians to bring into Kelowna to start off the new year, John was at the top of the list. I recently spoke with John about the show and was able to ask him a few questions.

Me: We had our first big show at the Habitat (Comedy Bloodsport) last week and it was a success. When I announced that you would be headlining on the 25th, people were excited. I think you have a good fan base out here.

John: Thanks. I am really looking forward to it.

Me: When was the last time you laughed till it hurt?

John: If it hurts when you laugh, you should see a physician. Car trips with comics I find eventually deliver some crazy laughing fits.

Me: What is the source of your material?

John: I plagiarize Family Circus cartoon strips.

Me: What was it like writing for the Junos? Did you write anything they wouldn’t allow on television?

John: I said that a barefooted KD Lang arrived in a limo with no floor and that she stopped it like the Flintstones.

Me: What was it like meeting Lou Diamond Phillips when you were in that movie with him?

John: He made me feel like I was the only person in the world and then our conversation went straight to VHS.

Me: Where did you record your last CD and where can people get it?

John: I recorded it in Oregon and you can get it on iTunes or in my garage in the the box under the BBQ.

Don’t miss John’s show on January 25th at the Habitat. Come early as tickets are only sold at the door. Tickets are $10.

Portage & Main lands at Fernando’s

Portage and Main

One thing that is amazing about the Okanagan, is the great inspiration we get from all of the music & friends that stop by when they come to town. I will not be able to make this show, but sit back, relax and enjoy a very happy Saturday night. We are so happy to have Fernando’s hosting awesome night of live music in downtown Kelowna.

Here’s a little romancing from their website: portageandmainband.com

Portage & Main strikes a chord in the same Canadian vein as Neil Young and The Band, with its southern guitar and haunting vocals. While the boys didn’t physically ride the timeless rails like tramps, the songs are as honest and genuine as if they had, displaying the insight of old souls whose hearts are fixed and bound to a boxcar traveling across the country. So sit by the light of Portage & Main’s fire and listen to alluring tales of the human experience as your weary travelers traverse the peaks of the misty mountains and wade through the depths of the rivers below.

Opening up for these bearded men is a softer and lovely Redbird. Take a listen on their website: redbirdmusic.ca

The band pulls from a slew of sonic inspirations, from 70’s rock to Motown, with Savannah’s subtly soulful vocals hinting at alt-country influences. It all comes together in lush arrangements of guitars and vocal harmonies, with crashing drums and droning organs. Since the release the band has been seen at Rifflandia Festival (Victoria), Pop Okanagan (Kelowna), Canadian Music Week (Toronto), and has shared the stage with Canadian Indie faves Library Voices, Yukon Blonde, Sun Wizard, Treelines and more.
