Food Truck Rally April 21-22, 2016

KEEPING THE DREAM OF THIRD THURSDAYS ALIVE

April 21-22, 2016
4-10 PM
264 Leon Avenue

Awesome Okanagan is pretty excited to be part of another food truck rally…mostly because it’s just so exciting to see so many people in Kelowna come out of hibernation and enjoy each other’s company around a table with good food! Based on the vibe from the inaugural event last October and the first spring event in March, this secret recipe of good things coming together in the mixing pot of an open air parking-lot-patio makes strangers into fast friends; creating a much needed feeling of community in our downtown.

This is the second event of the monthly series called Third Thursdays. On the Third Thursday of every month, a wide variety of food trucks will serve great food from 4pm until 10pm.  After the March Launch Event the main request was to make it a larger event and include more food trucks. So the April event will be spread over 2 days with a different mix of trucks on each day. You asked for it – more food trucks!

The Leon Night Market and Awesome Okanagan have teamed up to present an even better event this month featuring Kelowna’s hottest food trucks serving up delectable delicacies which will pair nicely with the beer, wine, ciders, and spirits from the beverage garden. (19+)

The stellar line up of trucks continues to grow…a detailed announcement will be made the week of letting you know which night your favourite trucks will be there.

Okanagan Arts Awards Sculpture Design

The selection has been made!   The 2015 sculpture that will be given to each of the category recipients for the upcoming Okanagan Arts Awards will be created by Dennis Cound from Kamloops, BC.

The sculptures will each be hand carved from Gypsum or Alabaster stone. The logo for the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan will be carved onto two sides of a block of the stone, resulting in a relief surface featuring this logo. Artist Dennis Cound has altered the logo very slightly for each one of the 14 sculptures he is working on, making each sculpture distinct.

Dennis Cound has been carving for many years in his home based studio in Kamloops. He has several special approaches, including the creation of intricate images onto deer, elk and caribou antlers.

Dennis was born in Montreal, but moved to BC when he was a youngster, and was greatly impressed by nature and the native art that was to be seen in the west. Following the artistic foundation of his father and uncle, Dennis began sketching and painting, but soon chose stone and antler carving as his medium. Wildlife continues to be a favourite subject for his artworks, but Dennis will also create “moments in time”, a combination of pictures of everyday life and the beauty they posses.

As Dennis explained, “I like to think of myself as a messenger. A liaison between you and the stone or antler. I have the honour and obligation to free each piece and share it with the world.” Each year, a new Call for Artists results in new design submissions for the award sculpture. This truly nurtures the creativity of our artists, who are challenged to create a new image each year.

The 2015 Okanagan Arts Award Design emulates the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan’s Logo created in 1967 by Nelson’s Kootenay School of Art director Zeljko Kujundzic

Exclusive Music Video Premiere Event Hosted By Public Records

Screen shot 2014-06-10 at 11.03.07 AM

Public Records is rolling into Kelowna this Tuesday and bringing along tons of local talent that we all know and love! The show will be held at the Habitat on July 17th, and trust me folks, you’re going to want to clear your calendars for this one. The evening is centered around exclusive premieres of the 2014 Public Records Music Video Grant holders, and we will be getting the first look at the finished products.

Tuesdays event will feature a performance by our favorite local heart throbs Van Damsel, and then showcase brand new, hot off the press videos by Van Damsel, Icelandia, Andrew Judah, Nuuka, Young Sparrows, Paperboy, Stage, and Matt Brevner. So much excitement packed into one night, I can’t even handle it.

We will also be getting a super special visit from one of the most talented, stylish, and handsome Kelowna-ite we know, Brandon Fletcher of Faked Potatoes. Since he ventured from Kelowna to pursue his passion as videographer extraordinaire in Vancouver, Brandon has been killing it in the film world and is snagging some amazing opportunities. For example, the new video he produced for Sebell’s “Till The Sun Burns Out” was featured on the Nylon Magazine website. Yes you read that right, NYLON! Tuesday will be the grand unveiling of Brandon’s newest video with Van Damsel for their song “Begins With A Return”. The guys road-tripped down to California to shoot the video, and considering how stoked and insanely jealous I was of their Instagram teaser pictures, I can’t even imagine how mind-blowing the final product will be!

Swing by Tuesday night to support all the local talent! Doors open at 7pm and because Public Records is the best, the show is free for our viewing pleasure!

Also, to get a taste of what you’ll be seeing on Tuesday, check out the video for Sebell’s “Till The Sun Burns Out” by Brandon Fletcher, and check out his website Faked Potatoes.

2013: A Retrospective

One year has gone by since I was welcomed as a contributor to the A-OK team and granted with many fantastic opportunities. In this retrospective I’d like to look back at some of my favorite events and meetings from the past year. More-so than just retreading the events this post will be dedicated to a more personal odyssey of what I’ve learned and how I’ve grown over the last year as a self-proclaimed journalist striving to immerse myself in our rich and vibrant community.   (Click on any of the headlines to be directed to my coverage of that event)

Honorable Mentions:

Keloha, Ecotone, Lille Gard.

Great festivals featuring many great artists and musicians in one place.
Lots of good friends made these fun, memorable times.
A special thanks goes out to all of the people whose hard work made them possible.

Top 5:

#5 – Okanagan Arts Awards

No other time did I get to dress so fancy, act so professional, or feel so exclusive as I did this night. After watching a motivational awards ceremony I got to socialize with with other well dressed supporters and talented achievers while drinking complimentary wine and eating hors d’oeuvres. The party continued on into the night  at Hanna’s Lounge and Grill on the waterfront…

#4 – By Divine Right interview

One of the two interviews I conducted this year with out of town musicians. It was a great experience and honor interviewing indie rock legend Jose Contreras who’s fronted the band throughout its 20 years and 10 albums and has appeared in music videos on MTV in the 90’s. He was really friendly as well, giving me a personal look into the life and times of an established and professional musician.

#3 – Center of Gravity

What I enjoyed most about this event was spending time with my new found friend and acquaintance from Sublime Photography & Design backstage at the media tent and up front in the pit. Having an experienced and professional photographer around helped boost my confidence and passion for the art, and helped me have a lot of fun as well. I also got some rad pictures of big names for my portfolio, and got to shoot my first bikini contest as well. Center of Gravity hosted a smorgasbord of sports which let me step outside my realm of concert photography and realize how fun and challenging different subjects can be.

#2 –‘ Tiger Moon’ video shoot

I’ve always had a strong interest in film, but lack the resources and funds to seriously pursue it on my own. So when I was given the opportunity to film the debut video of local band Tiger Moon’s  song ‘North Highway’ I was thrilled to bits. Along with A-OK’s editor in chief we drove out to a fancy acreage, met the wonderful Kasey Graff and Dan Tait, and shot the video in the loft of their fabulous garage using professional camera equipment. It was a fun time, and seeing the finished product instilled me with the greatest sense of accomplishment yet.

#1 – Festival in a Box

This was probably the least sanctioned of events that I attended this year, but also the funnest. A bunch of great fiends and people gathered together to engage the community and express their talents and art. It poured rain that day, but it didn’t put a damper on the experience and even helped to cement the whole experience in my memory.

This concludes my retrospective of 2013.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I hope it will be as full of friends, fond memories, and opportunities as the last.

Dylan

Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood contributor, Dylan Mazur.
