Exclusive Music Video Premiere Event Hosted By Public Records

Screen shot 2014-06-10 at 11.03.07 AM

Public Records is rolling into Kelowna this Tuesday and bringing along tons of local talent that we all know and love! The show will be held at the Habitat on July 17th, and trust me folks, you’re going to want to clear your calendars for this one. The evening is centered around exclusive premieres of the 2014 Public Records Music Video Grant holders, and we will be getting the first look at the finished products.

Tuesdays event will feature a performance by our favorite local heart throbs Van Damsel, and then showcase brand new, hot off the press videos by Van Damsel, Icelandia, Andrew Judah, Nuuka, Young Sparrows, Paperboy, Stage, and Matt Brevner. So much excitement packed into one night, I can’t even handle it.

We will also be getting a super special visit from one of the most talented, stylish, and handsome Kelowna-ite we know, Brandon Fletcher of Faked Potatoes. Since he ventured from Kelowna to pursue his passion as videographer extraordinaire in Vancouver, Brandon has been killing it in the film world and is snagging some amazing opportunities. For example, the new video he produced for Sebell’s “Till The Sun Burns Out” was featured on the Nylon Magazine website. Yes you read that right, NYLON! Tuesday will be the grand unveiling of Brandon’s newest video with Van Damsel for their song “Begins With A Return”. The guys road-tripped down to California to shoot the video, and considering how stoked and insanely jealous I was of their Instagram teaser pictures, I can’t even imagine how mind-blowing the final product will be!

Swing by Tuesday night to support all the local talent! Doors open at 7pm and because Public Records is the best, the show is free for our viewing pleasure!

Also, to get a taste of what you’ll be seeing on Tuesday, check out the video for Sebell’s “Till The Sun Burns Out” by Brandon Fletcher, and check out his website Faked Potatoes.

Great Lake Swimmers Live In Kelowna

Screen shot 2014-06-09 at 1.20.51 PM

Habitat has just dropped the news that they are hosting the Great Lake Swimmers live in concert on July 22nd 2014, and oh my goodness gracious are we ever excited! Not only is this 5-piece band from the best country in the world (Canada, duh), but they also have the ability to capture the essence of what makes Canada so beautiful in their sounds. It’s as though you can hear the Rocky Mountains drifting through the soft hum of violin, and vast forests of pine being held within the strum of their guitars. The bands most recent album New Wild Everywhere was released April of last year and beautifully builds on the sounds of past albums, while adding fresh elements of instrumentation and vocal harmonies. The end result is a stunning creation of nostalgic and folk driven tunes that are the perfect accompaniment for your next cross-Canada roadtrip. Or just pop the record in during your daily Tim Hortons double double run, because let’s face it, that’s as Canadian as it gets! I had the pleasure of seeing lead vocalist for Great Lake Swimmers Tony Dekker play at the Streaming Cafe late last year, and if his performance is any indication of what the show will be like on the 22nd, I am beyond ecstatic!

Tickets are going to be flying off the shelves, so grab yours soon at participating stores or at the Habitat E-Store

Here’s a taste of what your ears will be enjoying during the show, have a listen!

Bedouin Soundclash’s Jay Malinowski (& The Deadcoast)

z0JLC1e_VZv620z6QwlkSm4mrxVQi_DphlT4tC4UTv0Jay Malinowski & The Deadcoast will be performing at the cafe on Sunday, March 23 with special guest Astral Swan. Jay is best known for his work as frontman for Canadian trio Bedouin Soundclash.
Martel will be released on February 11th through Pirates Blend / Sony. An eighteen-song album, dichotomously perched between two sides, The Pacific and The Atlantic (tracklisting below), that brings to life the perpetually curious side of Bedouin Soundclash’s front man Jay Malinowski. Using the tumultuous life of his ancestor, Charles Martel, as a springboard, this album is part family tree; part introspective. The interactive website – www.whoismartel.com – houses a treasure chest full of audio and visual pieces of Martel, including the lyric video for the first single, Patience Phipps, and a black and white video for Tall Shadow From Saint-Malo.

“I’m really looking forward to bringing Martel alive onstage, enlisting the help of Krief (The Dears) and Vancouver three-piece string trio The End Tree into our onstage crew,” describes Jay Malinowski. “This show is going to be a departure from the past. It’s moody, ominous, destructive and beautiful all at the same time. Martel is a sailor, a man confronting his world. The audience participating in the story is integral, and we all can’t wait to start that journey. Come down friends, meet us at the gate.”

Astral Swan was the first act to be signed to Dan Mangan‘s new label Madic Records.

Tickets available online here or at both Streaming Cafe and Milkcrate Records locations!

2013: A Retrospective

One year has gone by since I was welcomed as a contributor to the A-OK team and granted with many fantastic opportunities. In this retrospective I’d like to look back at some of my favorite events and meetings from the past year. More-so than just retreading the events this post will be dedicated to a more personal odyssey of what I’ve learned and how I’ve grown over the last year as a self-proclaimed journalist striving to immerse myself in our rich and vibrant community.   (Click on any of the headlines to be directed to my coverage of that event)

Honorable Mentions:

Keloha, Ecotone, Lille Gard.

Great festivals featuring many great artists and musicians in one place.
Lots of good friends made these fun, memorable times.
A special thanks goes out to all of the people whose hard work made them possible.

Top 5:

#5 – Okanagan Arts Awards

No other time did I get to dress so fancy, act so professional, or feel so exclusive as I did this night. After watching a motivational awards ceremony I got to socialize with with other well dressed supporters and talented achievers while drinking complimentary wine and eating hors d’oeuvres. The party continued on into the night  at Hanna’s Lounge and Grill on the waterfront…

#4 – By Divine Right interview

One of the two interviews I conducted this year with out of town musicians. It was a great experience and honor interviewing indie rock legend Jose Contreras who’s fronted the band throughout its 20 years and 10 albums and has appeared in music videos on MTV in the 90’s. He was really friendly as well, giving me a personal look into the life and times of an established and professional musician.

#3 – Center of Gravity

What I enjoyed most about this event was spending time with my new found friend and acquaintance from Sublime Photography & Design backstage at the media tent and up front in the pit. Having an experienced and professional photographer around helped boost my confidence and passion for the art, and helped me have a lot of fun as well. I also got some rad pictures of big names for my portfolio, and got to shoot my first bikini contest as well. Center of Gravity hosted a smorgasbord of sports which let me step outside my realm of concert photography and realize how fun and challenging different subjects can be.

#2 –‘ Tiger Moon’ video shoot

I’ve always had a strong interest in film, but lack the resources and funds to seriously pursue it on my own. So when I was given the opportunity to film the debut video of local band Tiger Moon’s  song ‘North Highway’ I was thrilled to bits. Along with A-OK’s editor in chief we drove out to a fancy acreage, met the wonderful Kasey Graff and Dan Tait, and shot the video in the loft of their fabulous garage using professional camera equipment. It was a fun time, and seeing the finished product instilled me with the greatest sense of accomplishment yet.

#1 – Festival in a Box

This was probably the least sanctioned of events that I attended this year, but also the funnest. A bunch of great fiends and people gathered together to engage the community and express their talents and art. It poured rain that day, but it didn’t put a damper on the experience and even helped to cement the whole experience in my memory.

This concludes my retrospective of 2013.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I hope it will be as full of friends, fond memories, and opportunities as the last.

Dylan

Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood contributor, Dylan Mazur.
