Fashionate: Okanagan Thrifting

Thrift shopping can be a great way to shop on a budget. It can also your ticket to fabulous finds and high-end clothing that might be otherwise beyond our means.

Pop culture has proved to be very influential with our generation, and in recent years thrift shopping has gone from embarrassing to the hippest trend around. I have always been a fan; it feels like you’ve just won the lottery when you find something amazing.

You need to go into any thrift/second hand store with a purpose and you need to be prepared to search; search through the racks once, and then again and maybe a third time. There is that special something just waiting for you to take home.

Scarves, Coats, Sweaters and vintage bags are among my favourite thrift store finds. I love searching for a vintage coat that you wouldn’t find in stores nowadays, or the perfect giant grandpa sweater—that a grandpa most likely dropped off.

The very best find are those great luxury items that snuck into the stores and somehow stayed on the hanger long enough for us to find! Burberry Coats, Prada purses or Chanel—well Chanel anything. That’s the moment of thrift shopping that makes all hours of digging and searching all worth it.

A few helpful hints before you hit the pavement: If you have something in mind you are looking for, scope out the stores in your area, some second hand stores are consignment, and you will generally find your higher end clothing here. The big stores tend to have more volume, lesser value, but none the less great finds! Always remember to hit the accessory/bag section, somebody’s trash will most defiantly be your treasure! Have fun and enjoy a resourceful and environmentally way of shopping!

Fashionate: April Showers Bring an Explosion of Flowers!

We got a glimpse of the gorgeous Okanagan summer recently and that sparked a fire in my eyes to retire my dark winter clothes, and my heavy knit sweaters to the back of my closet and clear space for my brightest brights and floral prints.

2013 is introducing explosive floral patterns, and free flowing mint maxi dresses.  Floral has always had a foot print in fashion but this year we are seeing the flirty patterns take center stage. From full 3 piece suits to simple summer dresses you can incorporate it into any aspect of your wardrobe.

Flowers are not the only must have this year, your staple cropped denim is an absolute must. Any colour you choose, there will be one for you!

Whether you are a fashionista, you want to make a statement, or you simply want to look your fabulous self the ultimate MUST have this season is an orange bag. Over-size it, wear it as a clutch, or rock it in a patent leather but this is the ultimate 2013 summer must!

Check out your favourite vintage store FROCK to find a fabulous new bag, or stop by FRAKAS for your next favourite summer dress!

Fashionate: Spring is In the Air — What Do We Wear!?

We have all been waiting for it; the first bloom, the first day we don’t have to wear our puffy jackets, the first warm sunny afternoon. Well ladies and gents it is here that time has come, but with that we are left with mud, mud and well more mud.

I find this a difficult transition season; You don’t need your winter clothes, and quite frankly looking at them remind me of the cold grey weather, but you can’t wander out without a jacket.

These are my spring time ESSENTIALS that will tie you over into the warmer months!

1. Beanie – The most adorable hat that any girl can wear. Any accessory store is stocked with just about any color or pattern of your choice to pair with any outfit!

2. Distressed leather boots –  Whether you like them tall, short, or mid calf, a pair of worn in boots is a must have. Nobody will notice how dirty they get, because they are SUPPOSED to look worn!  Pair them with a bold pattern legging and a neutral boyfriend blouse with a long chain necklace, red lips and a chain link purse and you are set to start your day!

3. Bomber Jacket – Choose your material, leather, tweed, cotton, etc.  A light spring jacket is a must, especially in the mornings or evenings.

4. Infinity Scarf – It will never be too hot for an infinity scarf (ok MAYBE in August!) as the season change, alter your choice in scarf, move from a heavy warm wool to a light and airy silk. Pair your scarf with literally anything you please to complete the perfect outfit.

5.  Smart phone/Andriod/Iphone device – Do NOT leave home without something to catch all of the beautiful sights spring has to offer! As the flowers blossom and the world awakens you never know what magical sight you may catch!

If you have one, or all of these 5 essential items to get you over that bridge into Spring, it will be an easy breezy journey!

Fashionate: Viva Diosa by Gypsy Soul

Like the rest of Kelowna, I cannot get enough this summer’s for-sure festival clothing: Gypsy Soul.

Nestled within the brand of Gypsy Soul is one of the most fabulous lines of suede and leather clothing and bags I have ever laid my eyes on; Viva Diosa.

Viva Diosa is a sub-brand within Gypsy Soul. With all of her suede and leather coming from Bali, it plays like butter in your hands. Each bag item is unique to itself. I was scared I would wreck everything in sight. Chelsey, the lead designer and brains behind the line assured me all of her items are very durable and wearable.

If you don’t have your new bag for spring, come pick up one of her brightly colored over-the-shoulder suede fringe bags. Chelsey strives to stay away from black, replacing it with brilliant colors such as soft rose, tangerine, or my personal favorite, a piercing teal.  A color clashing bag with your outfit is the ultimate trend setting style this season.

Pick up a mulit-textured leather and suede clutch for a night out, or a fringe cell-phone holder. Each piece has a one-of-a-kind quality to it. You can’t help but prioritize it as a spring MUST-HAVE for your wardrobe.

If bags are not your thing, check out her clothing line that compliments the rest of Gypsy Soul immaculately, something Brandi and Chelsey tack into account when developing the Gypsy Soul brand. My absolute favourite item to date is the mustard poncho. I can’t help but need it!

The poncho goes perfect with a hot slit maxi skirt or a pair of silk Gypsy soul pants. This line within a line is absolute perfection, my staple for spring is going to be my teal over the shoulder fringe bag, what will yours be!?

Upon many other events, you can find Gypsy Soul at both Keloha and Center of Gravity this year, check out their Facebook page for all the latest updates and showroom times.
