“High Tide” Promo Video

Holy Ship! Awesome Okanagan and CREAM Salons are eager to board the high seas* (otherwise known as Habitat – 248 Leon Ave) together with some of the freshest talent the A-OK has to offer. So don your nautical clothes, it’s all hands on deck for “High Tide,” the 2013 Summer Fashion Show & Fundraiser. We had such a great time at Wild Heart with local clothing store Man + Woman we’ve decided to pair with them again. This nautical themed, sun-bleached party will be right in the heat of the summer and evoke the nostalgia of ’50s/’80s yacht culture. Don’t forget to dress up! Navy, tan and white are easy colours, red and gold are great accents, pastels are in season.

Anchoring the evening will be the one (sea)man looping act Windmills. As usual there will be a photobooth with photographers (pics or it didn’t happen!) to make sure all your friends know what they missed out on. Bring your dancing boat shoes.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Proceeds from the event will go to the Elizabeth Fry society.

Tickets include one door-prize ticket (more will be available for purchase at the event) and are available at CREAM Kelowna (#2-1771 Cooper Road), CREAM Madison (1389 Ellis Street), CREAM West Kelowna (#313-3021 Louie Drive), Man + Woman (#1365-2271 Harvey Avenue in Orchard Park Shopping Centre), Mosaic Books (411 Bernard Avenue) and Leo’s Video (2680 Pandosy Street).

Prizes include:

  • Two (2) $20 gift cards to DunnEnzies Pizza
  • Two (2) tickets to any upcoming Habitat Event (value depends on event selected)
  • Haircuts from CREAM Salons (valued at $55)
  • An ORIBE shampoo/conditioner from CREAM Salons (valued at $70)
  • $25 gift card and book from Mosaic Books
  • Two (2) tickets for Dinner and any Show from the Actor’s Studio (valued at $150)

*Nautical themed, not actually on a boat

A-OK Rooftop Sessions: JoyfulDoor

For this A-OK Rooftop Session, JoyfulDoor and Awesome Okanagan climbed a mountain at a time of day A-OK isn’t usually awake at (especially after working until 4am the night before). The view was incredible from the top of Layer Cake even if the weather wasn’t entirely co-operative. We got in a few takes of their song “Calcium” before we were rained out. Silver lining: we lucked out on the best audio take with some perfectly timed thunder.

Neat little history lesson, Layer Cake Hill is a volcanic land form composed primarily of Dacite [day-site], volcanic rock with a high silica content. It shows unique layering that has not been seen anywhere else.

Like what you hear? Catch JoyfulDoor opening our Hot and Dry Canadian Summer Kick-Off on Thursday July 4th. Awesome Okanagan and Cariboo Brewing invite you to join us the first weekend of July to celebrate our love of local music, too-hot days and festival-ready style with 10 bands over 3 days.

We Are The City – Baptism

Those boys in We Are The City did it again with their sophomore release, Violent. Here is their latest video for the single ‘Baptism,’ which uses scenes from their feature-length, foreign-language film of the same name as the album (Violent) which the band — whose members don’t actually speak Norwegian — wrote, translated, and directed in Norway.

Music video created by Amazing Factory Productions.

Windmills – Her’s Place

Windmills releases a live recording of his previously unreleased song “Her’s Place.” From the man himself:

“Her’s Place” is a nostalgic reflection on the summers of my youth spent in Northern Ontario surrounded by family on a small lake north of Timmins. It is far and away the most personal song I’ve ever written.

Lee Watkins and I talked about creating a video and I wanted to challenge us both to do something we hadn’t done before. So Lee set up his cameras, I recruited Cameron Lutz on percussion and Rob Raybould on bass (who also recorded the live audio) and we set out one hot evening in Lee’s studio with a 15 pack of Pabst to record a song with instrumentation we’d practiced the day before. This is the result.

A-OK Rooftop Sessions: Tiger Moon

In the latest (of what is increasingly becoming a stretch of the term) A-OK ‘Rooftop Sessions,’ we recorded a session with local band Tiger Moon in anticipation of our upcoming Hot and Dry Canadian Summer Kick-Off. Awesome Okanagan and Cariboo Brewing invite you to join us the first weekend of July to celebrate our love of local music, too-hot days and festival-ready style with 10 bands over 3 days.

Tiger Moon is Kasey Graff and Dan Tait. After another location fell through, we narrowed this shoot down to the top of an 18 wheeler and the balcony of a shop/party-house behind Kasey’s house in Rutland. Since audio quality was a concern and it was windy as hell outside this day, we opted for an inside shoot. Watch the Under Rooftop Session for Tiger Moon’s song “North Highway”

Local band Tiger Moon is just one of the talented acts performing and you can catch them July 5th.
