Focus Friday: Silver Star

silverstarThe Okanagan winter is so short that many of us forget to take advantage of it. The major ski resorts offer cheap tickets and rentals on Friday nights — it’s a great way to embrace winter and have some fun. I thought Ryan’s shot from Silver Star over the holidays captured some of the energy and positive vibe of those warm nights at the hill.

Hot and Dry Sessions: Windmills “Clocks”

As part of our own Throwback Thursday and keeping the #aokendlesssummer going strong, today and every Thursday for the next 10 weeks we’ll be releasing a live video by bands who performed at our Hot and Dry Canadian Summer Kick-Off at Habitat on July 4-6, 2013.

Here is Vernon’s Windmills covering Coldplay’s “Clocks.”

Windmills – Her’s Place

Windmills releases a live recording of his previously unreleased song “Her’s Place.” From the man himself:

“Her’s Place” is a nostalgic reflection on the summers of my youth spent in Northern Ontario surrounded by family on a small lake north of Timmins. It is far and away the most personal song I’ve ever written.

Lee Watkins and I talked about creating a video and I wanted to challenge us both to do something we hadn’t done before. So Lee set up his cameras, I recruited Cameron Lutz on percussion and Rob Raybould on bass (who also recorded the live audio) and we set out one hot evening in Lee’s studio with a 15 pack of Pabst to record a song with instrumentation we’d practiced the day before. This is the result.

Okanagan Arts Awards 2013

Last night I attended the prestigious Okanagan Arts Awards at the Kelowna Community Theatre; the Okanagan’s version of the Hollywood red carpet event. Forget about the Oscars; the true achievements and people we should be celebrating, are right here in our community. The doors to the event opened at 6pm, giving the guests and nominees an hour to mill around the lobby mingling over complimentary wine and appetizers provided by Summerhill Pyramid Winery and Chef Michael Lyon. At 7pm everybody filed into the theatre for the awards ceremony hosted by CBC’s Gillianne Richards & Chris Walker.

Get your tickets early and don’t miss this favorite carnival event voted “Best Adult Event” in 2012. Dress in green and participate in Newfoundland “Ugly Stick” competition. Sociable!
Doors open at 8pm. Must be 19+ to attend.

The Pre-historic Cave Dudes
“Post Prehistoric Cave Dudes” is a romantic – mostly – comedy which takes place in a cave… with window shutters to let in some light. The characters language seems modern enough, but their attire and attitudes are definitely prehistoric, until they discover music, mostly funk and jazz. Some characters even know the lyrics to songs they’ve never heard (well, except inside their heads). Amongst comedy, romance and trouble with a rival “tribe”, they still eventually manage to discover the source of the mystery they have labelled music.

And new this year they have also added a Winter Carnival Family day in Polson Park Saturday the 9th from 11-3pm.
